Tips to Keep Pets Safe in Cars When Traveling

The safety of your pets should be taken just as seriously as your own when they are a passenger in an automobile.

The team at Ashenden & Hollingsworth, P.C., has a few tips to help keep you and your pets safe when traveling.

Four Steps to Keep Your Pets Safe in the Car

Use a Crate or Car Seat for Your Pet

Keeping pets in a crate or car seat is the best way to ensure their safety. Crates and car seats can serve several purposes, from providing your pet with a sense of comfort to keeping them as safe as possible in the case of an accident. There are plenty of crates and car seats on the market for pets. Many crates are crash rated and proven to be very safe for pet travel.

Turn Off Power Windows

If you’re driving a vehicle that has power windows, make sure you lock them. It’s easy for pets to rest their paws on the window buttons, accidentally rolling them down. This can be dangerous for you, pets, and other drivers. If your dog isn’t familiar with having the windows down in the car, he may jump out, injuring himself and causing serious problems on the road.

Bring Water and a Bowl

No matter how far you’re driving with your furry loved one, it’s always a good idea to travel with a bowl and water. You never know what’s going to happen on the road. Whether you get stuck in traffic or are in an accident, your trip may take longer than expected.. We suggest bringing water from home or bottled water.

Don’t Leave Pets Alone in the Vehicle

You may think that leaving your pet in the car while you run into a store is harmless, but even just a few minutes alone in a hot car can have repercussions. No matter the temperature outside, your pet should not be left alone in the car. On hot days, even cracking the windows won’t help keep your car cool. Cars act as furnaces, trapping in the heat and preventing any air flow throughout the vehicle. Even on cold days, it’s not safe to leave your pet in the car, as it doesn’t trap in any heat.
